Geiger Sotto Executive Chair Debuts at NeoCon 2011
May 24, 2011
Geiger International introduces Geiger Sotto, a new executive chair for private offices or meeting spaces. Offering a beautifully proportioned silhouette, Sotto breathes new life into the desk/task category with a design that creates a unique harmony between comfortable work chair, objet d'art and coveted status symbol. The chairs make their debut at the Geiger Chicago Merchandise Mart showroom at NeoCon, June 13-15.
Well suited to environments in which a quiet design statement is desired, Sotto was in fact named for the Italian expression, sotto voce, meaning "in a quiet voice". Sotto's emphasis is on beautiful forms, hand craftsmanship and fine materials that gain even more character with time. "I started by looking at clothing, bags, briefcases, objects that are very personal," says designer George Simons Jr. "I wanted Sotto to be like wrapping yourself in a beautiful quilt, or a great jacket that gets better the more you wear it."
Sotto returns the practice of hand craftsmanship to commercial production, avoiding the trend toward chairs that are made by highly mass-produced moulding processes. Sotto's fine sewing and selvedge edge detailing require skilled handwork not possible through machine production. Simons adds, "Geiger is known for absolute quality and craftsmanship, so I said, 'let's distinguish this chair with craft'. I blended modern forms with traditional materials, and with craft."
Though not necessarily designed as a high-tech "ergonomic" chair, the Sotto vernacular also includes a selection of comfort options, such as a headrest on the highback version, an ottoman and a lumbar pillow. "I designed options that encourage the sitter to vary his or her posture throughout the day. It's not about sitting upright in a chair for eight hours. It's healthy to change your posture over the course of the day."
Available in two heights, two arm options, two upholstery-stitch details, three base finishes and optional accessories, Sotto offers a wide range of customization options to fit any design statement and style, from traditional to transitional to contemporary.
Geiger Sotto executive chairs, like all Geiger furniture, are manufactured at facilities that are powered entirely by green electrical energy. Energy used is harnessed from resources such as sunlight, wind or water flow and placed into the electrical grid, making the facilities carbon neutral in the use of electrical energy. Sotto will be GREENGUARD certified by its initial offer date, expected to be September 2011. Sotto also carries Geiger's 12-year warranty.
