Our Impact

Designed with purpose

A Sustainable Approach

Since day one, we’ve strived to make a positive impact on the community through sustainability and impact-driven programs across our facilities and as an organization overall.

Since the mid 90s, Geiger has been a trailblazer in sustainability standards and practices for furniture manufacturing. As awareness grew around the environmental impact of wood furniture—from lumber harvesting to stains and coatings — Geiger chose a different path. For more than two decades, we have remained committed to responsible materials, thoughtful processes, and enduring design.

In the mid-1990s, working alongside the Environmental Protection Agency and our chemical suppliers, we began developing water-based top-coat materials. By 1998, Geiger became one of the first furniture manufacturers in the world to transition fully to water-based stains and sealants—eliminating solvent-based materials and associated VOCs while maintaining the highest-quality finishes. Not only did this eliminate solvent-based materials and the VOCs associated with them from our processes—all while maintaining the highest-quality finishes for our products—but it also set Geiger on a course to become a leader in sustainable manufacturing.

At Geiger, our commitment to the environment is woven into everything we do—from reducing our carbon footprint to supporting ethical manufacturing.

Design that’s responsible by nature

Zero-waste facilities

Thanks to our comprehensive recycling program, Hildebran operates as zero-waste-to-landfill facility and we’re working on achieving zero landfill for our other manufacturing sites.

Water-based stains and top coats

Fulton only uses water-based stains and sealants and we’re working to eliminate solvent-based materials and associated VOCs across our other sites.

Biomass balance foams

Biomass balance (BMB) foams are an innovative alternative to traditional fossil fuel–based feedstocks made from a mix of renewable, plant-based materials. Used across seating lines such as Tuxedo, Clamshell, Nessel, and Saiba, we deliver signature comfort while significantly reduced carbon impact.

Closing the loop

We are working to increase furniture waste diverted from landfills to 10 million pounds (about 4.5 million kg) by FY2027, calculated by weight of any products diverted from landfill through take-back programs such as rePurpose.

Community Impact

Community means everything to us, which is why we invest each year in programs and traditions that give back.

Global Day of Purpose

Global Day of Purpose continues to grow as MillerKnoll’s signature engagement event. Each November, associates come together to give back in ways that matter most to them. In 2025, 110 of our Geiger employees spent the day volunteering by building moving kits for unhoused people, tree planting and supporting other initiatives in their local communities.

We Care Initiative

We Care is one of MillerKnoll’s longest-running traditions of community engagement. Since 1996, We Care has grown from a local effort into a global initiative. In the winter of 2024, We Care brought together over 325 architecture and design firms, 55 MillerKnoll dealers, and 2,000 volunteers helping 6,400 children create holiday gifts for family and friends.
