The design Ward Bennett considered his most comfortable chair

Scissor Chair

The Scissor Chair combines simplicity, support, and comfort in an elegant form comprised of softened rectangular sections in an X-shaped frame. The generous pitch takes pressure off the sitter's lower back. Perhaps that's why Ward Bennett considered it his most comfortable chair design.

design story

The deeply pitched seats and high backs of Brighton beach chairs—a seaside staple across Great Britain—inspired Ward Bennett's initial sketches for the Scissor Chair in 1964. Four years of refinement followed before the finished design debuted in 1968.

Refined proportions

At just 15.5 inches, Scissor's seat height is low enough to signal a lounge
posture while remaining practical for conversation and informal work settings.
