Sustainability

THE NATURE OF GEIGER
At Geiger, we have a clear vision of the social, economic and environmental drivers that affect our decision making in equal measure. Environmental advocacy and environmentally sound products not only make good economic sense, they make good human sense. Geiger is building an infrastructure guided by the Earthright strategy established by our parent company, Herman Miller, and we are committed to the ambitious 10-year sustainability targets listed below. Here is where we stand today.

Herman Miller Announces Earthright Strategy

May 1, 2014

Geiger's parent company Herman Miller, Inc. recently announced a new sustainability strategy called Earthright, building on more than 50 years of environmental learning and commitment to sustainability. Earthright sharpens and expands goals around the smart use of resources, eco-inspired design, and becoming community driven.

“To continue to be a leader in this area we must evolve our environmental goals and programs, and set ambitious targets to shoot for,” said Brian Walker, Herman Miller’s Chief Executive Officer. “With our Earthright strategy we’re not only renewing our commitment to environmental advocacy, we’re extending our work to the entire Herman Miller community.”

The Earthright strategy begins with three guiding principles; positive transparency, products as living things, and becoming greener together.

Positive Transparency
Herman Miller will share an unprecedented amount of information about the company’s environmental progress. We will also share our point of view on human and environmental health and, more important, what we are doing to transform our business from a net consumer to a net producer of resources.

Products as Living Things
Herman Miller will create better products and design processes to protect people’s health and well-being, restore the ecosystem, and give back more than we extract. We will do this by applying regenerative design principles.

Greener Together

Herman Miller knows it cannot solve these problems by ourselves. We must engage the entire community including employees, customers, suppliers, dealers, salespeople, and the public.

“Our Earthright strategy provides a framework for smarter resource management, but more importantly, it challenges us to rethink how we design our products, processes, and places to create a better world,” said Gabe Wing, Herman Miller’s Director of Safety and Sustainability. “We know that if we can inspire even a small portion of our community to make changes, big things can happen.”

ZERO LANDFILL AT GEIGER
Over the years, Geiger's comprehensive recycling program reduced solid waste sent to landfills from 112 tons per month in 2005 to 12 tons a month in 2008. In 2009, we began to send the remaining trash that could not be recycled to a waste-to-energy facility, which converts the waste to steam energy, helping power Redstone Arsenal in Alabama, the home of NASA's George C. Marshall Space Flight Center. As a result, our primary manufacturing facility in Atlanta now sends zero manufacturing waste to landfills.

AIR EMISSIONS AT GEIGER
Starting in 1988, Geiger participated in a voluntary initiative piloted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to reduce volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions. The goal was to reduce emissions by 50 percent by 1995, a goal we exceeded, reducing emissions by 81 percent.

Geiger manufactures many GREENGUARD-certified products, including wood seating. All Geiger GREENGUARD-certified products also comply with the ANSI/BIFMA x7.1-2007/m7.1-2007 standard. For the most current list of certified products, visit www.greenguard.org. In addition, no-added-formaldehyde (NAF) board is available upon request.

100 PERCENT GREEN ELECTRICAL ENERGY AT GEIGER
Geiger operations are powered entirely by green electrical energy. All energy used comes from resources such as sunlight, wind, or water flow and is placed into the electrical grid.

FSC CERTIFICATION AT GEIGER
In 2009, Geiger's Atlanta facility earned FSC® Chain of Custody Certification (FSC license number: FSC®-C121106). Now, in addition to Geiger's longstanding practice of using only woods harvested from well-managed forests, Geiger is also an FSC Supplier of casegoods that can be specified with optional FSC-certified veneers and core materials.

RECYCLING AT GEIGER
Nearly 100 percent of hazardous waste is collected, processed, and turned into supplemental fuel. Used stains and solvents are recycled or fuel-blended, resulting in almost no waste by-product. Wood waste is recycled for reuse; cardboard, metals, plastics and office paper are recycled as well.

MANUFACTURING AT GEIGER
Geiger's Atlanta facility is an ISO 14001-certified site. ISO 14001 is a voluntary, internationally accepted standard for environmental management systems that ensures responsible environmental performance.
