Of the nearly 100,000 species of hardwoods in the world, about 4,000 are useful as solid woods and veneers, but fewer than 100 species are considered appropriate for fine veneers. Geiger selects only the very finest of these and is one of the largest purchasers of architectural-grade, premium-select veneers in North America.
Geiger uses "export-sliced" veneer exclusively, never reconstituted or domestic-sliced veneers. Export-sliced veneer is sliced to the minimum thickness, yielding better fit and better finishes. Advanced technology eliminates the bark and sap, cures the logs and slices the veneer thinly to promote hardwood conservation. A small percentage of veneer with the most distinctive markings and details is set aside for Geiger's buyers. Consequently, the most distinguished, beautiful veneer characteristics found in nature are expressed in Geiger furniture.
The high grade of core materials used by Geiger ensures that twisting, bowing, cracking and damage caused by stress do not occur during the life of the furniture. Geiger's particleboard and medium-density fiberboard meet the Composite Panel Association's Environmentally Preferable Product specification. The boards are made from 100 percent recycled or recovered fiber, which is mixed with resin to create a very stable substrate, creating a significantly more stable surface than is possible with solid wood.
With the help of its suppliers, Geiger was one of the first companies in the world to develop and use water-based urethane coatings. In addition, Geiger employs an environmentally friendly finishing process (UV-cured roll-coating), which virtually eliminates VOCs.
Water-based stains enhance the wood, never masking it, while a water-based urethane topcoat protects the surface from damage and reduces care to an occasional wipe with a damp cloth. Geiger's urethane coating is engineered to be clear and long lasting, with superior physical properties. Adhesion is the most important of these, as the fierce bond of the finish to the fiber of the wood prevents de-lamination of the finish or "cold-weather checking." This adhesion keeps the finish with the wood when dents occur, eliminating the need for refinishing.
