Jay Chapman

Jay Chapman pursued an affinity for design while still in high school, where he studied architecture and drafting. In college he discovered a passion for furniture design. “It was then that I connected the ideas that you can be creative with a utilitarian craft like woodworking,” says Chapman. “I wanted to bring the finesse of handcrafting to furniture design.”

He earned a bachelor of arts and science degree in architectural studies from the University of Arkansas, followed by a master’s of fine arts in furniture design from the Savannah College of Art and Design.

Among Chapman’s design credits are Loophole coffee and side tables, which he designed for Geiger. Loophole’s base is made up of intersecting “loops” that appear at first to be a continuous piece, an illusion created courtesy of Geiger’s state-of-the-art wood carving technology. Examined more closely, the base is formed with precisely fitted mitered corners and thoughtfully designed joins at every seam.

Chapman’s work has been included in exhibitions at ICFF in New York City and Salone Satellite in Milan.
