With Leeway Seating, Keiji Takeuchi set out to design seating that maximizes freedom of movement within a minimal footprint. To achieve this, he leveraged Geiger’s strength in woodcraft to create a crescent-shaped, cantilevered backrest, which supports elbows while accommodating the side-to-side movements people make while socializing or collaborating.

Takeuchi knew his work on Leeway Seating was done when, in his words, “people were happy to sit on them.” As he explained, “If people have any hesitation choosing my chair over something else, that means something is missing.” From the crescent-shaped backrest to the optional seat pads, Takeuchi’s focus on comfort resulted in a design that invites people to use it, then exceeds their expectations.

The form of Leeway Seating emerged from its designer’s desire to follow the movement of the human body as people shift in their seat during meetings, meals, or any occasion that brings people together. The result is a distinctive curved backrest supported only by the two back legs that gracefully extend to meet it. “I knew the shape and cantilever of the backrest would be a challenge, but I also knew Geiger would be able to produce it,” Takeuchi says.
