George Simons Jr.

From a family of tinkerers and creators, who often made what they needed and fixed what was broken, George Simons, Jr. was destined to be a designer. Based in Seattle, Simons has had a diverse career spanning environmental, interior, and industrial design, architecture, applied design research, and branding strategy.

Practicing design as a human-centered and responsive pursuit informed by user experience, Simons seeks balanced solutions combining function, emotion, and relevance. At his core is a passion for integrating research and design to help businesses respond to opportunity.

“I think design is first about being observant, and then taking what you observed and being able to dream about better ways for that to happen.”

- George Simons, Jr.

Simons has worked with numerous clients both in and outside of the furniture industry, including IDEO, the office of Herman Miller Aeron Chair designer Bill Stumpf, and NBBJ. He currently heads the George Simons Office for Design.

His Sotto Chair for Geiger—based on the Italian “sotto voce,” for quiet or private—brings a unique energy to the office chair category with a design that’s part work chair, part design object. Sotto stresses comfort, fine materials, and expert craftsmanship.

His work has been exhibited in museums including Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum and MoMA, and recognized with numerous awards, including the Cooper Hewitt National Design Award.
